A very inspiring interview. I love to see someone follow their passion. I have A Catalog of Crime, although not the “revised and enlarged” edition. I will have to get it out and read about those authors (until I can get a copy of Curt’s book).

I wonder if Bertrand Russell’s biographer included the anecdote I once read from someone who picked him up at the airport when he visited New York. Apparently the first stop they made was at a bookstore so Russell could stock up on all the crime novels that he couldn’t buy in Britain.

Very interesting post – thanks to both of you! I read some of these authors in my early teens but have never revisited them and don’t remember much about them. This has prompted me to take another look.

Re the Doctor Who gag, I’m sure I saw the Tardis in the background in one of the episodes of Father Brown (although it was obviously just a regulation blue police box in those days )

I’ve never finished a FWC myself, but I’ve usually found Connington worth reading. And Sayers I like except for Lord Peter

I think the good thing about ‘Masters’ is that it made me think about looking more deeply at this bit of the genre – Curt’s good at spotting the other things that are going on.
