Ceri Meyrick, producer of Father Brown
Regular visitors to Past Offences will know of my affection for the Father Brown stories of G. K. Chesterton, and may have caught some of my pieces on the TV adaptation which will air in the UK in March 2013.
Judging by the number of visitors coming here looking for news about the series, it’s the cause of much curiosity. So I’m delighted to say that the Producer of the programme, Ceri Meyrick, has agreed to do a Q&A session with me, and that I’m offering visitors the opportunity to suggest questions.

This is what I know about the series…
- There will be 10 episodes, one of which involved underwater filming, and one with nuns.
- Mark Williams, of Fast Show, Being Human and recently Doctor Who fame, will play Father Brown.
- The show is based in the fictional village of Kembleford in the Cotswolds.
- The show is set in the 1950s.
- ‘Father Brown will be assisted in each episode by Parish Secretary Mrs McCarthy, the extravagant Lady Felicia… reformed criminal Sid Carter and the priest’s housekeeper Susie Jasinski.’
- Hugo Speer will play Inspector Valentine.

Sounds fascinating. Obviously it would be great to know if they are adapting the original Chesterton stories and how faithful they plan to be. Also, have the been influenced at all by previous adaptations such the movie with Alec Guinness in the 1950s and the Kenneth Moore TV series of the 1970s. Is Flambeau appearing and if so, who is playing the role?.

By the way, there was a BBC radio documentary in which Debbie talks about composing for series one. I *think* it was called Scoring Father Brown.

Dear Ceri i love the father brown series but as a child in the fifties I find it does not agree with my memories. So much stuffed shirt, keeping up with the jones’s, women and children completely fearful of hubby coming home and dinner not on the table. An expectation of daily beatings. A horrible era of fear, ignorance and physical punishment. As a child there was no colusion. Women stayed home and cared for the kids and everything else so hubby could big note himself around town. I’ve spent my life getting over it! So pleased we have moved on to the era of any question is a good question and questioning the prior beliefs. Father Brown would have been chastised and ignored or something worse.
