I covered the British Library’s crime publishing a lot last year, and it seems like they’re keeping up the good work with some new releases.
Two of the 100+ novels by early spy novelist E. Phillips Oppenheim will be coming out this August. The Great Impersonation is a WWI doppelganger story with a disgraced English aristocrat and a German baron swapping places. The Spy Paramount from the 1930s takes place in Fascist Italy and features a hunt for a secret weapon. Lovely cover.
John G. Brandon’s A Scream in Soho was originally published in the 1950s and is described as ‘an evocative and suspenseful London novel’. It’ll be available from this September.
Finally, Mystery in White by J. Jefferson Farjeon is a classic Christmas mystery from the 1930s, with a group of snow-bound train passengers trapped together in an empty house over the season of goodwill. Available from November.

All of these sound good. They may not make it to the US for a while, but I can hope.

The Brandon looks especial fun. I think I’ve read the Farjeon, aeons ago, although of course there must be dozens of mysteries with this approximate plot.

I read the Great Impersonation last year, and greatly enjoyed it. And I’d probably buy A Scream in Soho just for that cover.

Probably too late for this, but Tracy (and all other US readers of this blog) should know that all of the British Library Crime Classics reprints are released in the US. They are distributed through The University of Chicago Press. Anything released in the UK will be simultaneously released in the US. I’m on the receiving end for review copies from the UofC Press and try to review all reissues for this important reprint line. I’m looking forward to the Farjeon book since it’s very hard to find and was enthusiastically reviewed by both TomCat and Curt Evans on their blogs.
