Rowan Atkinson to play Maigret… ?

News has reached Past Offences Towers that Rowan Atkinson, whom it’s apparently OK to call ‘rubber faced’, may be playing Maigret in a new ITV adaptation. The article I read contained several ‘mays’ and is attributed to an ‘unnamed TV executive’, so I’d take the news with a pinch of salt, but I’ll keep an eye on developments. For the record I think he could carry it off. There’s a lot more to him than Mr Bean.

No, and it’s not the face which isn’t right for the role. It’s more that Maigret is always described as a large, bulky man, solid and imposing in stature, while Rowan Atkinson is rather slender.

That part’s easy enough to fix, in fact. The face would, I think, be more of a problem; but who knows? As our host intimates, Atkinson’s a clever and capable guy.

  6. I remain pretty sceptical but hey, if Hugh Laurie can be a huge start as a neo Sherlock, anything is possible, right?
