Thought I’d share the first picture of Rowan Atkinson as pipe-wielding flic Maigret…

Can’t be worse than David Walliams as Tommy…

I don’t like the trend for casting comedians as detectives – it smacks of not taking the genre seriously – especially the period pieces. As if the Golden Age should be regarded as something we could only do tongue-in-cheek.

That’s a good point, but I was thinking about it last night, and it’s not a new thing: Peter Ustinov and Margaret Rutherford sprang to mind. And, um… I’m sure there are others.

Will be interesting to see his take on the character~

Will be very interesting to see how he stands up, given his rich comic pedigree. Could be a “Heath Ledger’s Joker”, coild be a “Tommy Lee-Jones’ Two Face”…

However…although he is best known as a comic actor, I have seen him do serious stuff. He was Sir Henry Birkin, the racing driver, in an episode of HEROES AND VILLAINS called FULL THROTTLE. Suave, charming, and as totally unlike Mr Bean as you can imagine. I’m fascinated to see how he does in this.

Snap! Just posted this too – I am ever hopeful, despite precedent being against me (the Gambon series was;t much cop either) … 🙂

Yes, but you did some words as well – a much better job 🙂
I saw some of the Gambon series last year and was unimpressed. Too phlegmatic for its own good.

Yeah, real shame about the Gambon – watched it at the time but it never takes off, does it?

I like the look. Here’s to a big surprise for us all!

Moustache?
I liked about the first half of the Gambon series. It got a bit tired after that.
