What’s happened to Sid from Father Brown?

To satisfy my visitors searching for news of Sid, Lady Felicia’s chauffeur from Father Brown, I used my best magic spells and located his current location: starring as the grown-up Draco Malfoy in Harry Potter and the Cursed Child at the Palace Theatre in London.

And here he is…

I love Father Brown. Its a really great show, that doesn’t have all the nastiness al other shows out there. i actually enjoy watching it. But Bunty is ruining it. I never liked Sin, and in fact, most people I know who watch Father Brown never liked him, But Lady Felicia was wonderful. Its not a show aimed at young boys, so I don’t see how a typical snarky, big breasted chic is going to help. I still love the show, even with the annoying Bunty.

Counterpoint of wit between Father Brown and Sid kept the interest of my husband (also ‘Sid’)–we both enjoyed the good humored double entendre at times, and Sid seemingly a rogue often played more gentlemanly than many. Inspector Sullivan was at least intelligent, the new ‘inspector’ is a non-entity character with little substance. Bunty–waste of time entirely. Not the actresses fault at being cast as an empty wagon making a lot of noise. These over the top non-persons have cast a gloom over the previously enjoyed Father Brown series on which my husband and I have been happily binging but sadly, it’s all over now without Sid and Lady Felicia– two integral characters and the script that gave them life. Bring them both back–they are a part of the strength of Father Brown along with Mrs McCarthy. Father Brown needed all those wits from which to play off. Bunty and that ridiculous clown of an inspector character have ruined the whole experience. No sign of intelligent thought in the scripts. What a loss. We’d both just said how much we love the interplay of words, Sid and Father Brown, the humor, empathy, compassion. Now–worthless.

Finally the 2017 episodes are being shown but what a disappointment not having Sid and Lady Felicia – changes the show and not for the better. I loved the whole cast of Father Brown and the stories (not so much for the Inspector) and hope the producers hear the voices of the people asking for the original cast. Why change a perfect ensemble of actors who make the characters they portray so affable.

    • When Sid said good-bye to Father Brown and his entourage, he did say that he would be back. I guess he’ll be back when he finishes his theater role. He also rather nonchalantly mentioned Lady Felisa being in Rhodesia. I was wondering where they had her disappear to.

Exactly. I loved it. It kept on getting better and better up until Lady Felicia left, and Bunty showed up, and the tone became different Everything that made father Brown different then the other shows is being stripped away. The majority of the audience is fairly conservative, and doesn’t want to see sexed up women, or even have moral lessons about how we should all be liberal. Go back to just being an enjoyable mystery series, and don’t try to shock us.

Bunty looks to be a (sleezy) wrong turn as is the current (insufferable) detective. I think the writers or producers or perhaps the director have lost touch with why Father Brown original ensemble cast is so popular and beloved. Think about it…please DON’T BE JUST ANOTHER FORGETTABLE TV SHOW.,,The US has plenty of those, we look to UK togive some decent quality series. Tom Chambers is gone and I hope the character Sid isn’t gone through the entire season. I have to agree with all the comments concerning content change and how the role of the female actors have changed for the worse. The show is wonderful and shouldn’t be changed. Ms. Carroll is wonderful, please, bring her back if you can. She, Mrs.McCarthy and Sid along with Father Brown are this series, and if detective Sullivan is still available bring him back too. This series is so wonderful. The setting is so lovely. For someone who lives in America getting to watch an English show is so great. I am so hooked on English shows of taste I cannot watch American television any more.

The Inspector, omg way too over the top, for this show, time for him to be replaced by someone more ” charming “.
Hopefully Father Brown will regain its great writing and story lines once again with the former cast.

AND SPECIAL NOTE an episode I just watched called The Rod of Asclepius, the main crime with the tank in the surgery room painted wrong was stolen from an old book called Green for Danger by Christiana Brand in 1944. A British movie was made of this book in 1947 with Alistair SIms.
I am so sorry I knew this because now I don’t know what scripts I can trust to be original. I mean it wasn’t even a G.K. Chesterton story that it was taken from!?

    • Woofer Roc says:

Very few of the TV scripts are based on actual GKC (Gilbert Keith Chesterton) Father Brown stories. As I recall from the director/rproducer interviews at the end of the season 1 series DVD, they said they only used 5 (or so) such stories as a starting point, but told the writers to work from those, and that carried on in like manner the following seasons as far as I can tell.

As examples of stories I read/re-read from the books, Hammer of God, Eye of Apollo, Blue Cross, Invisible Man, Three Tools of Death, and Sign of the Broken Sword are barely recognizable. Most of the episodes prominently display the caveat at the beginning of being “based on characters” of GKC (or something to that effect). I understand the need to make them more “film-friendly”, and less anachronistic, but stories that are supposedly “in the spirit” of GCK/FB such as “Lair of the Libertines” in Season 3? Yeah, right…

Then again, to give the writers their due, there are many Chestertonian gems uttered by the FB character scattered throughout the various episodes that, fittingly do provide a refreshing Christian core message. Saving souls, a frequent goal of FB, was a GKC quest in all of his many works. I think Mark Williams does a wonderful job of conveying that mission.

Look for GKC’s books and essays, and read the real thing. Most are available as free ebooks in about any format you care for, i.e. txt, epub, html, mobi on gutenburg.org, and without any DRM encryption restrictions since they are way out of the copyright protected period.

I have watched Father Brown from day one enjoying and looking forward to each new episode because the cast, stories and beautiful English Manors and countryside were in complete synergy. This season there seems to be a change of script making it the Bunty Show minimizing the Father Brown and Mrs. McCarthy characters as well as a change in the stories becoming more sensational. Bring back the originality which made Father Brown such a treat to watch – there was nothing like it in U.S. market but now it is steam rolliing away from the charm it had.

As a long time fan of the show I fear father Brown “has jumped the shark” with losing Sid and Lady F, adding Bunty, and making the Inspector too much of a buffoon. I don’t begrudge AP his tole in the Potter Play or NC her role in Prime Suspect 2017 but losing them has ruined the special chemistry that made the show so great. it was so refreshing to have had a show with old fashioned ethical and religious values as well as great mysteries and a real sense of a family group. What they have done is not going to increase or broaden the audience but risks losing a good part of a dedicated audience. It’s not toll late to fix this, I hope..

Hope the writers catch on soon that we miss to former Fr. Brown themes and solving crimes by being observant and more clever.

I have been googling and I don’t see a reason for her leaving the show. All this is speculation on my part. I think I saw in the posts that Sid does come back. I like Lady Felicia . Maybe she will come back? I like the Bunty character. I hate the snarky stupid inspector, but maybe he is a good actor and we are supposed to hate him? I prefer the other actor befor him!

The same with the character of Bunty. I’ve read all the previous comments … it’s good that Father Brown has such a good fan base and I am one of those … but someone in the upper level of production always feels the need to change something to leave their mark. Notice: You’ve left your mark. It is a heartfelt request that we get the original four back! The return of the good, no great, writers! Return a more humane Inspector! Keep the sergeant! I don’t mind Bunty, as she is humorous and free spirited. The only character I really can’t stand is the new inspector. I’ve commented a couple of times about missing Sid and Lady Felicia. But this week’s episode (# 12 think of Series 5) Alex Price as Sid returns. He was sporting a full beard (for his Harry Potter role). Seems he was on early release from a 1 year jail sentence that he was framed for. Fr. Brown gives him guidance as to why he should not kill his former defense attorney who did not defend him to please other folks in the plot. Some very kind words were spoken between Fr. Brown and Sid at the end of the episode (Fr. Brown says he is closest thing he had to a son. And Sid said Fr. Brown saved his life when he was a youth. Sid apologized to Fr. B for selling the watch he gave him when he turned 21 so he could buy a gun to kill the lawyer. Then Fr. B gave Sid his own watch as a replacement. Very touching.) Then Sid told Fr. B, Mrs. McC and Bunty (who is Lady Felicia’s niece) after reviewing his life and the lost year that he was leaving for a while to have some adventures. He might go and “drive Lady F.” around Rhodesia. In short, it was a great edisode and the cast worked well together. Good for Alex Price for snagging a fabulous role in Harry Potter stage play. And, it being a small world and all, this week I watched a Harry Potter film and saw a very young Fr. Brown (actor) as the father of all the Weazlies! I recognized his voice first and then his kindly, young face. Mr. Weazlie works at the Ministry of Magic and his job was to interview Muggles. I thought it was a fun connection.

Likewise Mark Williams might be internationally remembered as Mr Weasley but came to fame in a comedy sketch show called The Fast Show. Like a lot of comic actors who go on to play more dramatic roles he is very believeable as Father Brown. As an Anglophile American I loved Sid the Lovable Scamp although I felt Lady Felicia screamed too much, you think after 4 seasons of dead bodies she would have managed a little more poise. This new inspector is a loathsome turd I thought they were going to redeem when they introduced his wife and kids – but no. I loved inspector #1 they gave him a promotion and a plausible exit where inspector #2 disappeared to is anyone’s guess. All of it points to lazy writing (the shows tawdry now, not clever) and the death of a good show. But I’ll probably finish season five for Sorcha Cusacks sake and hope they don’t ruin it further with a season 6.

Nothing is forever. Cast members want to advance their careers. Producers have to cope with budgets and bookings. Writers and directors fall into the trap of emulating successful shows and following trends. All of the above result in change – for the better or worse. We, the viewers, prefer to watch and enjoy continuity of cast and writers (unless they get too soapy). Murder She Wrote is a good example of success with continuity. Dr. Who, not so much. I find it unfortunate that in order to enjoy Father Brown with Alex Price and Nancy Carroll, I am relegated to watching re-runs. (Yes, I purchase the DVD’s). If at all possible, Bring ’em Back! Just chiming in to totally agree with all statements abhorring the deletion of Alex Price and Nancy Carroll. It is so true that THIS was a show with delightful entertainment from the actors and events in all areas, as well as good mysteries. Perhaps the most recent season was an attempt by the producers, writers and/or directors to freshen the marque; if so, it fails, and indeed, is having the opposite effect. Furthermore, I totally agree that Jack Deam’s portrayal of the Inspector is ludicrous – I sincerely HOPE it was the directing. And, the characterization of Bunty is the diametric opposite of Lady Felicia – farcical and overdone. Father Brown’s characterization – the anchor of the show – is sadly underwritten and overshadowed now. Also, the synergy of Felicia, Syd and Mrs. McCarthy is just gone, and the show is sadly diminished. I, too, will not be watching further seasons unless they restore them. And, I will no longer recommend it to others.

As a Catholic priest, he seems rather heretical and far too 21st century to be credible…though I am neither a Catholic nor a member of the 21st century. Still, the TV episodes are more interesting than the short stories. I don’t understand the hostile comments comparing Felicia with Bunty–they seem almost the same to me.

I agree with you on all points. As is almost invariably the case with these TV narratives set in the fifties and sixties (an obvious sop to boomers), the worldviews of the lead-character moral touchstones are impossibly anachronistic: racially and sexually egalitarian, gay-friendly, and non-judgmental of the “mortal sins.” Even a foil character like the supposedly conservative Mrs. McCarthy is ultimately tolerant. In the fifties the Vatican would have drop-kicked this Father Brown into outer darkness.

Sometimes actors need a change; get an offer they can’t refuse; or just don’t want to be type cast. There are enough shows on the BBC for them to take some time off. Death in Paradise has had three detectives now and many of the cast have shifted. That is very like normal life where people move on (or die). The new inspector on Death in Paradise has been roundly chided but I remember him from Father Ted and he’s ok, just different. Insightful comment. Though I miss the ensemble cast, I think Bunty has a lot of potential. She is funny and gutsy and has a good rapport w/Mrs. M. Seems new detective is played just for laughs, which is probably a waste of his acting skills. Still would choose FB than most other junk on TV nowadays.

This is amazing. Most of the comments obviously reflect a disappointment with the direction the show has taken. Loosing two main characters and substituting with what appears like a hasty decision to fill the roles and a change in script to benefit the new actors rather than the actors fitting/playing their roles.
Will the powers that be take heed? Will fan comments go unnoticed by producers, directors and writers?
I agree completely with statements regarding American TV. Its total trash.

  135. I do not like the new filming, the new girl, the little bit of Father Brown, and his young male friend. Bring back the regular people or I’m finished.

Just saw a clip with someone else playing Father Brown….I will not be interested in the show if Mark Williams is not father Brown. Bring Lady F. And sid back, love Bunty….but, want other two back. Love this show.

Make Father Brown great again! Bring back Syd and Lady Felicia! Give Mark Williams whatever he wants to keep him as Father Brown! I LOVE this show. Please don’t “make it better” by messing it up.

Just caught up on Father Brown episodes without Sid and Lady Felicia. What a huge disappointment. The previous ensemble cast worked beautifully . Bunty and the new inspector are over done, totally unattractive characters who add nothing to the series. What a shame.
